Constipation occurs when people go to the toilet lees often than usual, or when it is difficult to pass a motion. It is a change in a person’s usual pattern of bowel opening.

A process called peristalsis, where the gut muscles contract, squeezes food through the gut so that you are able to go to the toilet. For a smooth passage, bowel motions need to be large enough to help stimulate these gut contractions and soft enough to slide easily along to the bowel.

The most common symptoms of constipation are:

  • Passing a motion less than what is usual for you
  • Having to strain to pass a motion
  • Pain when passing a motion
  • A feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
  • A feeling of bloating and sometimes nausea
