Athlete’s foot is a common infection of the skin of the foot, usually caused by a fungus called a dermatophyte.
The fungus lives on dead skin, hair and toenails and thrives in warm, moist environments. Anyone can develop the infection if their feet come into contact with flakes of skin from another infected person or from communal rooms such as changing rooms.
The symptoms of athlete’s foot are a flaky, very itchy, red rash between your toes. This can crack, become white and peel off, or blister and become very sore. Your feet may also smell unpleasant.
