Thrush is an infection caused by yeast called candida. Small numbers of candida commonly live on the skin around the vaginal area. However, these are usually harmless. The immune system and the harmless bacteria that normally live on the skin and in the vagina usually prevent candida from thriving. When conditions are ideal for candida, it multiplies and can invade the vagina and cause certain symptoms. The conditions which candida thrives in are warm, moist and airless parts of the body.
